writing camp - day 4

Day 4 and today’s group - Group E - were every bit as zany and rambunctious as any other group. There was a lot of noise and chaos, though lots of creativity too.

What really struck me was how contrary 11/12/13-year-olds can be. (I should know this; I have one.) So after they’ve done the drawing game where they fold a piece of paper into pieces and create a figure without knowing what came before or after (Monster), they wound up with three figures. (See below.)

I also drew a squiggle on a piece of paper to demonstrate the difference between true randomness and controlled chaos. (See below.)

Then, I asked them to choose one of their three figures to be the main character in the story they would write. So of course they argue that the squiggle I drew is actually a person, and not just any person but String Bob and that String Bob will be the main character of their story. It’s unanimous. String Bob wins. Ah well. Sometimes, you just have to roll with it…
