writing camp - day 5

Final day. Graduation. The final day was great. I was so lickedy-split with the material that we ended 20 minutes early. Oops. We played extra games and I let the kids go early. Today’s Exquisite Corpse story was called “String Bob’s Biography: He Was Shot Six Times, Married Three Times, Had a Child, Was Stabbled Four Times (Including in the Face), Was Eaten by a Tiger While Blood Was Gushing Out, Was Stuck in a Bucket, and Lived to Tell the Tale”. The kids were inspired by my cookbook, which had the following subtitle: Being an Idiosyncratic and Lyrically Recollected Account of Menus, Recipes, History, Trivia, and Admonitions on the Subject of Alfresco Dining in Cities Both Large and Small. (This might help explain the book’s lacklustre sales.)

On top of the last day of class, I hosted the readings at the gala tonight, and I was so impressed by the bravery of the nine kids who got up to read their work in progress. This was stuff where the ink was still wet from writing and rewriting, and I’m beyond impressed that they’d get up in front of 100 or 150 people (I’m bad at estimating crowds) and let fly. But let fly they did, so a big shout-out to Annick, Olivia, William, Samantha, Vanessa, Reham, Rvie, Katie, and Sandy for their work.

Finally, tomorrow is the Symposium on the Book. I’ve just read the bios of the other panellists and authors. Why, oh why, do I agree to do these things!? I should be preparing notes right now, but instead, I’m watching Avril Lavigne interviews on Youtube, via Susan Juby’s blog. Susan Juby, you’re a bad influence.
